Digital technology, for example, has already had an enormous impact on retail. In the first twenty years of bar code technology, for example, retailers became more powerful than the brands as they were able to harness the data available to them and have better control of their own inventories.
That benefit, however, is now moving to platforms such as Amazon, Alibaba, and others as e-commerce continues to transform the retail business. Physical retailing is also in the process of transformation due to technological change allowing for increased automation in stores.
I would add order fulfillment to a definition of this space as commerce does not work without delivery services of the kind offered by UPS, Amazon and the Post office.
